AH-64E Attack Helicopter “BAG” Testing Night Flight Capability

Publication Date: 2019/02/10

(reported by journalist Zhou, Sheng-Wei from Military News Agency on February 10th in Taoyuan) The AH-64E attack helicopter not only has strong reconnaissance ability and massive firepower, but its combat capability during nighttime is also the reason that it is able to dominate battlefields, and that is why it is referred to as the “Strongest Attack Helicopter in the History”; though exerting its powerful nighttime dominance, all pilots must undergo the hellish experience of “BAG” before flying at nighttime.

BAG is the final test before flying an AH-64E attack helicopter at nighttime, which is also the nightmare for each trained pilot. As the name implies, BAG symbolizes how pilots are trapped in a pitch black bag and must operate the helicopter by only relying on the information displayed on the meter and the strategic helmet; not only do trained cadets have to be familiar with the complex control system, but they also have to be equipped with the interpretation ability of 3D spaces regarding the size, length, height, and various information about the helicopter.

Apart from the familiarity of the helicopter, the assessment pressure coming from the instructor sitting on the front seat is also another ordeal for the cadets. During BAG, the cadet is seated on the rear seat, and the instructor on the front seat, just like a driving course; when the instructor notices any danger or improper operation from the cadet, the latter will be reminded or warned, and if the situation is critical or if the cadet is performing poorly, the instructor at the front seat will take over immediately to ensure flight safety, though that also indicates that the cadet has not passed the standard, and will require another hellish test.

BAG is a night flight test subject exclusive to the AH-64E attack helicopter, where the non-transparent sheet at the rear seat is specially designed by the original manufacturer, and the helicopter itself is also the only model among various domestic aircrafts that is capable of undergoing night flight tests during daytime. Pilots’ night flight capability is elevated gradually through the methodical training from courses, simulator, and BAG, which then exerts the powerful combat capability of the AH-64E attack helicopter in a more effective approach.
